Confirmation School Classes are Complete

The students arrived on time for the 9am start of the final day of Confirmation School. Six lessons were covered today making nine total for the school. Of course that is very abbreviated from a typical school in North America or Finland which has 45 lessons, mas o menos. Miguel Santana translated all lessons.

The lessons borrowed heavily from Luther's Small Catechism. We did three lessons in the morning and then made our "class trip" which was a walk to a park near by. On the way back we stopped for ice cream bars. That was a special treat for them.We then had lunch and resumed our lessons. By 3pm we were complete and an early supper was served. The students did well in their efforts to answer questions and to remain attentive. Sometimes the most difficult question is answered by the one you wouldn't expect. When asked to explain what the word 'gospel' means the students were stymied. Dylan finally answered the 'Word of God' which is true of course. Walt pressed the question and asked for any other ideas. Gonzolo answered "good news" which is the meaning we most often recite.

Anais (age 12), Edgar (age 13) and Dylan (age 10) at the park.
It was our 'confirmation trip' which we celebrated with ice cream bars.

Lessons covered:
1. The Most Previous Matter of Our Life
2. The Fall
3. Conscience and Confession
4. The Apostles Creed
5. Baptism
6. The Lord's Prayer
7. The Kingdom of God
8. The Ten Commandments
9. Communion

The typical school has a list of nearly forty questions to gauge basic knowledge of the students. In this case only questions related to the nine lessons were reviewed with the students. At this point the details of the actual ceremony have not been worked out. The size of the class will influence what we do at our Wednesday evening confirmation exercise.

The confirmation was abbreviated because of the weekend only
schedule. We covered nine lessons.
Norma Torres, a teacher and mother of Dylan was present for the Sunday lessons.
